Kaos - Kaos Among Us (Oblivion Entertainment)

By: Donnie Grames

[6/10]Two phrases sum up Kaos Among Us: extreme riffage and blazing percussion. Stacey Murray and Joe Loescher pump out guitar licks reminiscent of Slayer but have the ability to bring the music to an almost thrash metal blues tone. The opening cut ‘Mass Of Fury’ opens with a rallying cry back dropped with furious guitars and Burton Ortega’s speed drumming. Unfortunately early on the album loses its creativity and returns to the old standard of stomp and scream. The first five tracks are stellar songs that evoke a listeners most hidden aggressions but soon after Kaos loses the emotional aspect and opts for shout choruses and aggressive vocals that stretch vocalist Jason Darnell chops far too thin. Darnell can sing but he doesn’t possess the deep below that is so fitting in this type of act. Only on the title track ‘Kaos Among Us’ does the band measure up to the first half of this record. Another rallying cry song that persuades the listener to “come and join us on our path, it leads to future stillness in twilights aftermath.” Lyrically, Kaos wants their listeners to question societal convention and those things accepted without any investigation. Once Darnell earns his metal rasp and bellow, Kaos should be ready to take the reigns from forefathers like Slayer and Pantera.
